Thai Vowels for Beginners
Thai vowels do not simply sit after a consonant. They can appear on every side of it—but each pattern becomes predictable once you learn to see the consonant as the center of a syllable.

Thai learning charts use อ as a neutral placeholder. A dash shows where the consonant belongs. So เ- means the vowel symbol is written before the consonant, while -า is written after it.
In เก, the vowel เ is written first but the consonant sound /g/ begins the spoken syllable: gee, not eeg.
Vowel length can change meaning
Thai distinguishes short and long vowels. Length is part of pronunciation and can separate words, even when the vowel quality sounds similar to an English learner.

Why one vowel may change shape
Some vowel forms shorten or transform when a final consonant closes the syllable. For example, the long เ-อ family appears differently in words such as เดิน (doen, walk). Learn these as complete spelling patterns instead of treating every mark as an independent letter.
The symbols ฤ ฤๅ ฦ ฦๅ are traditionally included in vowel inventories but occur far less often in everyday beginner vocabulary. They can wait until the core patterns are comfortable.
Four mistakes to avoid
- Reading strictly left to right. Scan for symbols surrounding the consonant.
- Ignoring length. Hold long vowels clearly longer than short vowels.
- Depending on English spelling. Romanization varies between sources and rarely carries enough tone information.
- Learning isolated charts only. Attach every pattern to a real word and its sound.
A five-day vowel practice plan
- Learn -า -ี -ู and build three words with each.
- Add the front vowels เ- แ- โ-.
- Contrast three short–long pairs by ear.
- Add ไ- ใ- เ-า using common words.
- Read ten mixed words without transliteration, then check with audio.
